Titan’s haze structure in 1999 from spatially-resolved narrowband imaging surrounding the 0.94 Mm methane window

چکیده
[1] We use narrowband images of Titan obtained in November 1999 to explore the haze vertical structure in Titan’s lower atmosphere. The images were taken with the MountWilson 2.54m telescope using the NASA/GSFC-built Acousto-Optic Imaging Spectrometer. These images were recorded at five wavelengths surrounding the 0.94 mm methane window and are sensitive to a range of altitudes in Titan’s lower atmosphere. We characterize Titan’s limb darkening by fitting the Minnaert function limb darkening coefficient k to our data at 0 latitude and compare our observed limb darkening to that predicted from three radiative transfer models. The vertical haze profiles suggest a gap in haze below 75 km, with an increase in haze abundance near the surface.

Spatially-resolved spectroscopy at 1.6 Mm of Titan’s atmosphere and surface
[1] We present spatially-resolved, low-resolution (l/Dl 1,500) spectroscopy of the leading hemisphere of Titan in the H-band (1.5–1.7 mm) using adaptive optics. Spatial variations of surface albedo are observed in images at 1.55– 1.57 mm, which are clearly distinct from stratospheric haze. There is a significant increase in albedo around the southern (summer) pole at 1.62 mm. Using a plane-para...

We assembled spectral image datacubes of Titan in H-band (1.4131.808 μm), using adaptive optics on the 10-m W.M. Keck telescope, by stepping a spectrometer slit across Titan’s disk. We constructed images of Titan at each wavelength by ‘glueing’ the spectra together, producing 1400ultra-narrowband (~0.1nm) views of the satellite. With this method one can characterise Titan’s atmosphere over the ...
متن کاملA new VLT surface map of Titan at 1.575 microns
We present a first high contrast 1.575 micron surface map of Titan, that is haze corrected by simultaneously imaging the stratospheric layer. At visible and most near-infrared wavelengths, the methane rich atmosphere completely obscures the surface; only in a few narrow wavelength windows does the atmosphere become optically thin. One of the most convenient windows (Griffith et al. 2003) lies a...
متن کاملTitan imagery with Keck adaptive optics during and after probe entry
[1] We present adaptive optics data from the Keck telescope, taken while the Huygens probe descended through Titan’s atmosphere and on the days following touchdown. No probe entry signal was detected. Our observations span a solar phase angle range from 0.05 up to 0.8 , with the Sun in the west. Contrary to expectations, the east side of Titan’s stratosphere was usually brightest. Compiling ima...
متن کاملTitan’s 2 Mm surface albedo and haze optical depth in 1996--2004
[1] We observed Titan in 1996–2004 with high-resolution 2 mm speckle and adaptive optics imaging at the W. M. Keck Observatory. By observing in a 2 mm broadband filter we obtain images that have contributions from both Titan’s surface and atmosphere. We have modeled Titan’s atmosphere using a plane-parallel radiative transfer code that has been corrected to agree with 3-D Monte Carlo prediction...
